The Principle of Being, as affirmed in the above quote, has been said in many ways. Mystics of every era have understood it; sacred books of the world have written about it; and devotees of all time have “caught it. “

Grasping the far-reaching concept that ‘I am the image and likeness of God,’ requires that I first grasp the concept of the three-fold nature of God, i.e., Spirit: The Absolute Essence of all that is. Soul: The Creative Medium. Body: All objective manifestations of the invisible Principle of Life.

In the early days of my exploration of the Science of Mind I gave myself Mental Treatments for the purpose of manifesting the things I longed for. Very often, the evidence of those things “hoped for” had a short lifespan, since, like a reflection in a mirror, they had no real-life substance. They became the proverbial “things that moth and rust destroy.” 

I soon realized I had it backwards. It was not clear to me at the time that I could only demonstrate (show forth) that which I already have. I began to see that it was the feeling of divine goodness within me that I was seeking to express. Emma Curtis Hopkins teaches that all of creation is aroused by that feeling that affirms, “There’s good for me and I ought to have it.”

I now know, the money I desired represented my inherent nature of Freedom. Health represented my birthright of Wholeness. Fulfilling relationships represented the Love that I am. The home and car I desired represented Beauty and Joy inside me. Like every artist, there was a deep longing to unleash the inner splendor that was felt. Early on, I did not know that I was the creative artist that I am.

Now that I have gained some measure of spiritual maturity, my self-awareness ignites the Creative Medium within me. I give myself a Spiritual Mind Treatment so I may consciously demonstrate the presence of God in me ~ the very essence of who I am. The Freedom, Abundance, Peace, and Harmony I feel within me, are realities right now. I affirm this is so and I allow these divine qualities to express as a world that works for everyone. I affirm a world where each and every person has enough food, a home, and a sense of belonging. I declare they now manifest as enfranchisement and justice.

I now realize, whenever I seek first the kingdom of God within me, and affirm Its Presence as the specific thing I desire to experience, the Creative Process begins. The Spirit of God, in me, as me, actually becomes the objective manifestations in the world according to my word of Truth.

In other words, I am the image and likeness of God, fully imbued with divine attributes. I express these qualities as the people, places, and things I experience. I AM the realization of Perfect God, Perfect Humanity, Perfect Manifestations. 

I go forth in confidence, doing that which is mine to do.

This Weeks Affirmation

I notice that whenever I am faced with the hardened facts of materiality, old thought patterns may cause me to perceive circumstances from a 3-dimensional point of view only; failing to include the fourth dimensional me, which is Pure Consciousness, One with God. It is in this state of limitation that the false beliefs of the mental realm SEEM all-powerful.

I must constantly remind myself that when I say the word “God,” I am not referring to  a Human-Like- Being outside of myself, lest I slip into a victim mindset, believing there is a power doing something TO ME¹. A sure sign of this descent in consciousness is when I hear myself say something like: “Why does this always happen to me?” 

Using the word “God” interchangeably with words like ‘Spirit, Love-Intelligence, First Cause, Divine Presence, and Source,’ to name a few, supports me in staying awake. 

An equally important reason that I remind myself that I am not referring to God as a ‘Being  somewhere out there’ is the possible misconception that when I use the Law of Mind for the specific good I desire that I am doing something TO IT ², like changing God’s mind; although it sure feels like it at times. 

It is through affirmative self-talk that I catch glimpses of Reality and begin to say, “It is not I, but God who does the work.” I begin to feel and sense the Presence doing something THROUGH ME³.

When I consider what is mine to do, my spiritual practice of affirmative prayer supports me in the clarity I seek. My every prayer affirms that God, the Divine Presence, is the only power there is. This conviction deepens my faith in Omnipresence, Omnipotence, and Omniscience. To the degree that I remind myself of my oneness with Spirit; it is to that degree that I realize God AS ME ⁴. My self-talk affirms, “I AM.”

The attributes of the fourth-dimensional aspect of my being are greater than that which is in the world. However, I do not ignore the hardened facts of ignorance that are prevalent. Jesus did not; Buddha did not; Confucius did not; Martin Luther King Jr. did not; Malala Yousafzai did not; Nelson Mandala did not. 

The enlightened mystics of the ages acknowledge they are in the world, though not of it. They unleash their awakened state of Pure Consciousness. What they give is who they are. Their Self-giving-ness lifts the collective consciousness to a higher vibration of Self-Realization.

Likewise, I give who/what I am. I unleash the energy of Divine Love each time I let my words ignite the Immutable Law of Cause and Effect by affirming Light where there seems to be darkness; affirming Peace where there seems to be pain; affirming Joy where there seems to be sorrow. I practice lowly listening to the still small voice within me and become exceedingly aware of the Action that is mine to do.

 I believe when error thoughts are healed among the masses, just like herd-immunity, the seeming lesser issues will spontaneously fade away. The unenlightened ego that believes it is the dominant factor will lose its power, and the new and enlightened consciousness of the Divine Self surfaces, knowing Itself as one with all.

The idea that the only Life there is, is God, is awe-inspiring and far-reaching in its implication.  The concept of One Presence expressing in multiplicity means each one of us is an individualization of the One. This whole notion is filled with promise and unlimited potential.  It implies and stands to reason that the nature of God is everyone’s inherent and changeless nature. 

This train of thought may cause one to question their true purpose, or ponder, what is mine to do? Until that inner question is satisfied, the sincere truth seeker may experience divine discontent; an emptiness that can only be filled by the energy of unity … the fullness of belonging. Once awakened to our true identity and aligned with The High Ideal … every thought, word, and deed becomes a dynamic and energetic force for good released into the world.

Emma Curtis Hopkins tells us, “There are three ways of dealing with the principles announced in Truth. There is the deep thinking which the mind exercises respecting them. There is the speaking them forth which we do not hesitate to do. There is the careful recording of them, which is writing down what we know of them. The next is living them, which we are sure to do if we think, speak, and write them. It is by faithfully doing all these things with Spiritual doctrine that we accomplish the works of the Spirit in us.”

In Ms. Hopkins’ statement, she provides a clear regiment of spiritual practices that is sure to bring one to a point of self-realization, identifying the Spirit in us as Peace, Love, Harmony, Beauty, Joy, Order, Wisdom, Abundance, Intelligence and more … all that make up the totality of God. One may conclude that expressing these qualities as a way of life is our purpose, to the end that we become contributors to a world that works for everyone. 

True purpose and belonging have nothing to do with a particular vocation one chooses to follow, or the social skills one has acquired, although they permeate those things.  Instead, they become embodied characteristics of a way of life that the enlightened have discovered. Purpose and belonging are like a response to a personal call to action that gives reason for one’s existence.

Oprah Winfrey has been known to ask her guest interviewees, “What is the one thing you know for sure? This thought-provoking question, when carefully scrutinized and answered, reveals a life principle that undergirds one’s individual life and out-pictures in some way into the whole of humanity. 

The one thing we know for sure can be measured against anything, anywhere, and at any time, and with true observation, the nature of that thing is predictable, reliable, and consistent. Whenever we speak about it or act upon it, there is a sense of purpose, confidence, fulfillment, and belonging to something greater than ourselves. In many ways, it is the evidence of that which is not seen.

Whether consciously or subconsciously, we are forever using our word of power by telling ourselves ‘what’ would make us happy, i.e., a healthy body, financial security, a fulfilling career, a loving relationship, etc., etc., etc. The Love-Intelligence within us knows exactly ‘how’ to bring about the specific thing described. It’s as if we have an agreement with the Creative Force of the universe that asserts, “I know what, and God knows how. “

As social beings in the world, we have been told that ‘our word is our bond’, and that when we keep our word, we show commitment, dependability, and responsibility. Of course, these qualities make good friends, neighbors, partners, coworkers, and leaders when they are in alignment with the highest good for all. Therefore, it is important to be awake and aware of our motives and intentions. Otherwise, it is so easy to fall into the trap of commiserating with someone about whatever the state of affairs appears to be at any given time. While much of the “ain’t it awful” dialogue may be based on empathy or sympathy, it is, nonetheless mis-directed, therefore missing the mark of the true intention and, inadvertently, a new agreement may be established.

As spiritual beings in the world, we are endowed with the attributes of The Divine, i.e., Peace, Love, Wisdom, Harmony, Beauty, and all that is Good. These qualities are the Word of God within us. When we realize these qualities are the very essence of our sincere intentions, they neutralize all opposing ideas. Actually, these qualities are the good we seek in all of our affairs.

When Ernest Holmes said, “Find me one person who is for something and against nothing, who is redeemed enough not to condemn others out of the burden of his soul and I will find another savior, another Jesus and an exalted human being”, I do not believe he was suggesting that we ignore the facts of life.  I do believe he was speaking about the power of living in the solution, and the courage to break the mental agreements that no longer serve us; and in so doing, we may be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

Begin to notice how our energy begins to shift from fear, anger, anxiety, and doubt when we no longer agree that failure and doom are the expected future, no matter how many times we have successfully predicted otherwise by our downward gaze.

We may begin today, right now, breaking agreements that were made out of ignorance, e.g., ones that yield blame, shame, and fear. In an awakened state of unity with all beings, let’s make new agreements, e.g., ones that yield love, harmony, peace on earth, and good will towards all beings. In so doing, we join the enlightened ones of the world whose consciousness of oneness corrects human errors.

Affirmation

Upon first hearing about the universal principles that undergird the ever-changing expressions of life all around us, the point is sometimes lost in translation. In other words, the message may sound a bit “airy-fairy,” as if it suggests that one can influence God by using certain words and gain special favor. This cannot be further from the Truth. God, the Presence and Power permeating the universe is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

On the other hand, as we change our point of view about outer circumstances, and align ourselves with the nature of God, the whole picture changes. It is the one who consistently affirms the changeless nature of God that their own beliefs are influenced, causing seeming miracles by this renewing of the mind. The Master Teacher, Jesus, taught “it is done unto us as we believe.” The Science of Mind teaches “change your thinking, change your life.” 

It is through observation, the seeker of Truth comes to realize that God, the Changeless Reality is the All-Pervading-Presence of Love, Peace, Harmony, Abundance, Beauty, Oneness, Order, Wisdom, Intelligence, Wholeness, and Joy. This Universal Essence is Omnipotent (All Powerful), Omniscient, (All Knowing), and Omnipresent (Everywhere). It is at the very core of every being regardless of appearance. It is from this perspective, the enlightened ones exclaim, “With God, all things are possible.” The conscious journey now begins, and it is through imagination that one begins creating and accepting a life of fulfillment.

We each have full reigns over our Imagination. The activity of creating images in the secret place of our minds sometimes feels like child’s play. And, to some degree, it is. However, do not dismiss your ideas as too good to be true.’  Remember, “It is the Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom;” i.e., Principle, properly applied, responds to all alike. Analogies such as, “We must become like little children in order to enter heaven” (the realm of fulfillment.) and “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see (realize/experience) God” tell us that through imagination, we gain clarity about our true desires. We become receptive to the infinite possibilities stretched before us. 

We each live, move, and have our being in Infinite Potential. Ernest  Holmes puts it this way: “We believe that the Universal Spirit, which is God, operates through a Universal Mind, which is the Law of God; and that we are surrounded by this Creative Mind which receives the direct impress of our thought and acts upon it.”  

The images we create in the Creative Medium of Mind can be likened to vibrational waves, an invisible frequency that ignites the Energy of Infinite Potential and evolves into its tangible likeness. 

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
(Philippians 4:8, New International Version)
